What you will find

The Carles Fontserè Studio Workshop, in the town of Porqueres (Pla de l'Estany), preserves and displays a major part of the legacy of one of the most representative artists of the 20th century in Catalonia, Carles Fontserè i Carrió (Barcelona, 1916 - Porqueres, 2007).

His long career as an artist encompassed some remarkable work in various fields of the arts, such as painting, drawing, writing and stage design, and he was particularly adept in the fields of poster design, illustration and photography.

His life and work were marked by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, when he began as a poster illustrator for the Commissariat of Propaganda of the Generalitat de Catalunya. He joined the International Brigades in favour of the Republic during the War, although the defeat of the Republicans led him into exile in France, where he continued his career as an illustrator, comic book artist and stage designer. He later moved to Mexico and New York, where he continued to develop his role as a photographer. He worked in Europe and the Americas from New York through some intense professional activity. He collaborated with Salvador Dali and Mario Moreno ("Cantinflas") and directed various publications in the fields of fashion and advertising while continuing to work as a painter and illustrator. He began a brillian career in the field of photojournalism during this period by publishing his work and reports in various American and Spanish newspapers.

He finally returned to Catalonia in 1973 and settled in the Can Tista i Montguix estate in the town of Porqueres, where he set up his artisitc studio and workshop. Carles Fontserè and his partner, Terry Broch, donated his work to the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1994 in order to preserve, maintain and disseminate his legacy.

The Carles Fontserè Studio Workshop belongs to the final life stages of Fontserè, a multifaceted and unique artist of his generation. The space contains several of the artist's paintings, personal belongings, books and photographs to help visitors discover a part of his creative universe. The tour includes an overview of Fontserè's life and work and aims to provide more information to the general public about this key artist of the second half of the 20th century.
