The Monastery of Sant Daniel | Cultural Heritage. Goverment of Catalonia.

A monastery with a thousand-year history

The Monastery of Sant Daniel is located in the Vall de Sant Daniel in an area of natural beauty just ten minutes' walk from Girona's Barri Vell district. The monastery has, for more than a thousand years, housed a community of Benedictine nuns, the heirs to an outstanding heritage.

The monastery was founded between 1015 and 1018 by Ermessenda and Ramon Borrell, countess and count of Girona, Barcelona and Osona. The 11th-century Romanesque church was built according to local tradition, with a nave but without side aisles, and a magnificent dome crowns the crossing at the intersection of the nave and transept.
