Description

This codex fragment, dated between the years 800 and 850, is the oldest document preserved in the Vallès Occidental Regional Archives. It is a parchment bifolio with the text of Saint Gregory’s Moralia in Job, written in librarian Visigothic, a script specific to the early medieval Iberian peninsula. Rediscovered as the cover of a notarial register from 1545, this fragment is testimony to the survival and reuse of written materials over the centuries. Its value transcends the theological content: it connects us with the origins of written culture in Catalonia and with the European intellectual tradition of the High Middle Ages. It is an example of how, even in its most fragile vestiges, the Catalan documentary heritage is part of the cultural fabric of Europe, and how the archives preserve the memory of a civilization that is built from the word and the book.
