Description

Gabriel Roig’s will, dated 1507, is the oldest preserved document that refers to Hospitalet and constitutes a source of great historical value for the city. In this document, Gabriel Roig disposes of his property and makes explicit mention of several local religious spaces, such as the Bellvitge hermitage, the Center church, the church of Santa Eulàlia de Provençana and the chapel of Santa Cândida in the hospital. These references make it possible to reconstruct the spiritual and social landscape of l’Hospitalet at the beginning of the 16th century, and show the presence of an active community with religious and welfare links. The document, preserved in the Municipal Archives of l’Hospitalet, is a sample of the notarial documentation that has been preserved in the parishes of the diocese, and provides valuable information about daily life, devotional practices and the territorial configuration of the time. It is, therefore, a key piece for understanding the documentary origins of the city and its historical evolution.
