At the heart of the city
The 12th-century Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants is one of Girona's most important Romanesque buildings. Unusually, is located within the city, given that most monasteries were built in more isolated locations.
It is also notable on account of its chancel and bell tower. The Sant Pere chancel is complicated and asymmetrical. It is formed by a main apse with two minor apses on both sides and, at the far end of the transept there is a further apse, which suggests that elements of a former church have been incorporated into the structure. The perfectly symmetrical octagonal bell tower, with Lombard decoration, is also located here.
