According to the experts, the three technologies that will have the greatest impact in the field of cultural heritage over the next decade are big data and its treatment by artificial intelligence, telepresence (online meetings, virtual visits, etc.), and 3D technologies, from the capturing of reality to its exploitation in digital format, such as visualisation on computers, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.
The Giravolt project has been launched in response to the second of these, and to promote the use of 3D scanning technology, as well as the treatment of the resulting models, within the field of Catalan cultural heritage. It is a collaborative initiative that traverses many fields of study to provide a new format for the entire chain of cultural work, from conservation to final dissemination and reuse.
It is an initiative of the Catalan Government's Ministry of Culture, implemented via its Directorate General for Cultural Heritage and the Catalan Agency for Cultural Heritage. All the museums and organisations in the country involved in the administration of heritage that wish to do so can join the project.
The aims of Giravolt:
All this is possible thanks to new techniques such as photogrammetry, which makes it possible to obtain 3D models of objects in a much more accessible way, and technical advances in laser scanning technology that have led to its increased use in architecture and archaeology.
