Els Ulls de la Història: A new look at Miravet Castle
Step back in time with a first-person journey through Miravet Castle, discovering the lives of those who lived within its walls and the medieval society that sustained it over the centuries.Traditionally, the castle’s history has centred on the Templar presence and the mythical aura of this order of warrior monks. The new installation sheds fresh light on other voices from medieval society – people who helped maintain the castle but were never part of the Templar order. In the cellar beneath the inner courtyard at Miravet Castle, a VR experience lets you witness the fortress’s moments of splendour and its fall through the eyes of Saïd, a young Muslim boy who works the castle lands with his family. In the church, the daily life of the villages in the Miravet commandery – the territory governed by the Templars – comes alive, and in the refectory, the monks’ communal meals are recreated.
Miravet Castle stands as one of the finest examples of Templar architecture in Europe. Originally a religious and military building of Arab origin, it follows the defensive style of the castles of the Holy Land, with majestic walls rising above the River Ebro.
In 1153, the Christians conquered the castle, and Ramon Berenguer IV entrusted it to Pere de Rovira, Master of the Templars in Hispania and Provence. He rebuilt it and established Miravet as one of the main centres of Christian power on the Iberian Peninsula.
