Nestled at an altitude of 845 metres in the Collsacabra natural area, lies Rupit, a small village that has preserved all of its medieval charm. It’s one of the two villages that make up the municipality of Rupit and Pruït, in northern Osona. During your visit, be sure not to miss the suspension bridge which crosses the Rupit stream and is one of the village’s most distinctive features. It’s the gateway to the village’s old town with its cobbled streets and vibrant colours from the flowers that adorn the balconies. The village has been declared a historic-artistic site due to its exceptionally well-preserved houses which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
One of its standout features is the bell tower of the Church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel, which dates back to the 18th century and is built in the Neoclassical style. Make sure you climb up to it –a nearly 30-metre vertical ascent–, as you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the village and its natural surroundings. And if you enjoy walking, a roughly thirty-minute stroll along a panoramic trail will take you to the Church of Sant Joan de Fàbregues, just a few kilometres from the centre of Rupit. It dates back to the 11th century and is built in the Lombard Romanesque style. Surrounded by rocky cliffs and dense forests, it was the parish church of Rupit until 1878.
It’s well worth continuing the path to the Salt de Sallent viewpoint, home to the country’s highest waterfall with a drop of over one hundred metres that will leave you speechless. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit and admire the water cascading over the rocks. If you make the climb along one of the trails leading there, you’ll reach the spot where the water pools, an oasis among rocks sculpted by this waterfall that looks as if it belongs in a storybook.
You can extend your walk through the high ground with a visit to the Bassis viewpoint. In fact, one of the most interesting points along the route is a set of anthropomorphic tombs carved into the rock. Once at the viewpoint, all that remains is to take in the breathtaking panorama of the surrounding landscape.
In autumn, the damp forests of Rupit are some of the best places to go mushroom hunting. Among them, you’ll find spots like the rocas encantadas (enchanted rocks), a set of different shaped boulders surrounded by spectacular wild nature, or the l’Om forest, a lush beech woodland which is also the starting point for several hiking trails.
