Director of the Institute for Sustainable Heritage (ISH) at University College London (UCL), where he is a professor of heritage science. He studied chemical engineering at Universitat Rovira i Virgili and the history of science at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He specialises in preventive conservation and has a particular interest in computational approaches. His research focuses on transport phenomena in historical objects and spaces, especially the impact of environmental factors such as suspended particles on the conservation of cultural artefacts.
He has led a variety of training programmes in the sector, including a Master in Data Science for Cultural Heritage and a Master in Sustainable Heritage. He participates in several research projects, including ITHACA (Integrating Lifetimes in Heritage Capital), which is funded by the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council), as well as various projects with the British Ministry of Culture to assess environmental conditions in museums. He also regularly collaborates on projects funded by the European Union and has been the national coordinator of ERIHS UK (European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science), the European research infrastructure for heritage science.
