The romanesque architecture of the Baix Llobregat

The Sacred Catalonia route will lead you towards some of the hidden treasures that will transport you back to the origins of the Baix Llobregat. Although today it is very urban district, this was a frontier territory formed by castles, parish churches and monasteries, examples of which are Santa Maria de Cervelló and Sant Ponç de Corbera.

SANTA MARIA DE CERVELLÓ

Located beneath the ruins of Cervelló castle, to the south of the town's former centre, the Church of Santa Maria de Cervelló is an example of the early Romanesque in which the use of local stone gives the building a reddish hue. Over the course of time it has been dedicated to different saints. It was dedicated to Santa Maria de Cervelló at the beginning of the 20th century.

SANT PONÇ DE CORBERA

The impressively compact church of Sant Ponç de Corbera is all that is left of a former Benedictine monastery. Despite the destruction of the other monastic buildings, the church, which is a fine example of the early Romanesque architecture of the 11th century, is in very fine condition.

The Sacred Catalunya route is intended for groups and lasts for approximately four hours. For more information please ring 693 720 202 or send an email to reserves@cataloniasacra.cat.
