‘Game of Thrones’ conquers Girona

For just over 15 days, the old town of Girona became part of the Seven Kingdoms from the ‘Game of Thrones’. The shooting of the successful series, produced by HBO, is the world's best shop window in which to display the heritage attractions of the city.

The scenery that will appear in the sixth season of ‘Game of Thrones’ include the Cathedral, the hill of Sant Domènec, the Arab baths area, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, Plaça dels Jurats, Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic, the Jewish ‘call’ and the Portal of Sobreportes.

Warriors, maidens, conspirators, merchants have been parading around these emblematic areas of the city... and the great city ‘stage’ has been filled with wooden barrels, carts, tables and stalls in the market.

Girona has joined other European cities, such as Seville and Dubrovnik, which have been the backdrop for this fantasy series that has captivated millions of viewers from all over the world. The City Council estimate the cost at 3.6 million euros for an advertising campaign with the same impact as filming the ‘Game of Thrones’, which will premiere on television in April 2016.

Among the nearby locations that will feature in this wonderful production is the Castell de Santa Florentina in Canet de Mar (Barcelona), as well as the Bardenas Reales in Navarra and the Castle of Zafra (Guadalajara), among others. Places of great heritage interest that, like Girona, expect to play a leading part in this most "cinephile" tourist route.
